Outline for Class: Thursday, 4 February
Topic: Ocean margins: west from San Francisco
Class activities:
- Mercator and other map projections; how they distort size
and shape; for example, the Mercator projection causes area at
high latitudes (near the poles) to look much larger than it really
is.
- Ways to measure bathymetry (depth to the seafloor): soundings
(single measurement at one location), echo sounder (continuous
reading beneath a ship), side-scan sonar (broad swath of depth
measurements beneath a ship).
- Review of Exercise 1 images and questions.
- Video: "Oceanfloor Legacy: A Critical Juncture";
see questions for video on page 5 of the course reader.
- Question for 3x5 card: What do you think should be done with
the radioactive barrels?
